There’s scientific research behind the concept of retail therapy. When people are sad, they spend money to cheer themselves up. When people are happy, they spend money to celebrate that joy. Instant gratification and impulse purchases are big money makers for retailers. Taking advantage of the emotional aspect of shopping is harder for e-commerce sellers since instant gratification is removed from the equation. However, online shopping provides a rush that in-person can’t offer, and that’s sweet anticipation - the increase of pleasure by delaying or restricting it. According to Hubspot, “While consumers crave immediate ownership, they find the acquisition sweeter when they have to wait for it.”
Think back to the last time you received a package in the mail. Excitement and delight most likely washed over you as you eagerly ripped it open. Imagine how much better the experience would be if, instead of its’ typical bruised cardboard box, your package arrived and looked like an actual gift. Creating a thoughtful unboxing experience is a low-effort, high-impact way to wow your customers. This is the final opportunity to let your brand shine and leave a lasting impression, encouraging repeat shoppers, and providing a consistent experience from beginning to end.

Once you've physically shipped your package, be sure to follow up with the customer. Thank them for their business and provide them with tracking information. When it comes to buying items online, extra communication is always appreciated. You should also leave feedback for the buyer that will hopefully remind them to leave feedback for you.

With the costs of shipping on the rise and with the necessity it seems that free shipping needs to be offered as well in order to make the sale. Then all the hands out for commissions, then to suggest to go out and buy new packing material the very little profit if any quickly disappears. Though all that stuff is nice, in a realistic world its few and far between unless you can order in such bulk that you get you’re containers for pennies and ship with such volume as say Amazon that you’re shipping cost is at .99 Cents or $1.50 per order no matter where its going. Then to me this is not realistic in such a competitive market.
Hi Canus_Corner! Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback on our blog post about packaging for an impressive unboxing experience. Every seller has different margins and some may not be able to provide this extra service. That’s okay! You may still be able to enclose a coupon and thank you note in the package.
Thanks for the tips. It helps to have great advice when the holiday season begins.
You’re welcome, Jeffcotx! I hope you are able to use some of the tips provided.
Very nice to know and thanks for the inspiration to help.
Glad to help, Titanic_Pro!
As a seller from home and for a business I agree with Canus_Corner to some extent for the costs but you can list your item to cover those costs (somewhat). I try to think about myself as a buyer when packaging the items from home. There are many inexpensive ways you can get packaging materials (USPS Flatrate boxes are free from USPS) Newspaper end rolls, check out the local party stores for day after holiday sales to get the bows and tissue paper. Making the buyer experience the best possible is ALWAYS in the sellers best interest. Thanks Shelly for keeping us up on the buyer experience.
Hi Brian! Thanks for adding some great suggestions for keeping costs down and still providing an excellent experience.
I always wait until after Christmas and get loads of tissue paper…sometimes depending on the items I use ribbon also (to seal the plastic bags the teddy bears come in for my other booth, for example)…but you do have to be careful, these things can cut into small profit margin. The other concern is that most of my items can ship first class and a few are borderline…so adding the extra can mean a great deal of difference in shipping (between 15.9 oz FC and 1 lb 1 oz priority)
But I do package everything securely…to protect the items
Hi Cynthia! Thanks for taking the time to add some additional recommendations and cautions for packaging. I especially appreciated the tip about watching the weight of the package. That’s the advantage a coupon has, it won’t affect the weight! Plus a coupon will help get your buyers back after the holidays, turning them into loyal customers.
Thank you for the fantastic information, as always!
You’re welcome, DoctorDriveIn!
Thank you for the Post. I purchased some very inexpensive stickers that say “Repurposed for the planet” to put on my boxes. The buyers seem to like the idea if it is intentional. But I always use clean, sturdy boxes with the previous labels removed. Plus include a Bonz business card with coupon as suggested.
That sounds like a great plan, tammiestreasures!
Good points, it is all those small details that can make a difference. I try to incorporate all those ideas.
Thanks Steve!
Thank you for the tips. Starting a small home town business during these difficult times can be a challenge for everyone. :)
